Open Call for Advisor Pool

California’s people are its most treasured resource, and the role of the returned citizen is particularly critical to California’s Arts in Corrections program. Participation from individuals who have been directly impacted by the state’s carceral system ensures the integrity of our evaluation process.

By sharing feedback from their lived experiences, panel advisors contribute guidance to panelists to help aid in the design of arts programming that is true to the needs of those currently experiencing incarceration in state correctional facilities.

Were you formerly incarcerated? We want you to be heard! Here’s your chance to support and uplift California’s incarcerated community by lending your valuable voice to state contracting decision making as an Arts in Corrections panel advisor.

How It Works

Arts in Corrections utilizes a competitive bidding process called a Request for Proposals (RFP) to select organizations interested in providing rehabilitative arts services for incarcerated individuals at state correctional facilities. Submitted proposals are reviewed by a panel of AIC staff and a member of CDCR’s Division Rehabilitative Programs, with guidance and input from a returned citizen panel advisor.

Requirements

The advisor application will be reviewed according to the requirements below. If you are eligible, you will be included in our advisor pool. Any returned citizen in the pool may be contacted and offered the opportunity to serve on an upcoming review panel.

  • Must complete Part 1 of the advisor application in its entirety

  • Must be a California resident

  • Must have been formerly incarcerated at a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation adult facility

  • Must be able to participate on a panel that may convene between one to three days online or in person in Sacramento

  • Must commit to accessing and reviewing proposals and all work samples during the RFP evaluation process and provide guidance to panelists

Privacy Note: Information submitted in this application will only be available to CAC staff.

Advisor Support

Advisors will receive a $200 honorarium per day of service, in addition to travel, accommodations, and per diem (if applicable).

Service/Eligibility

By completing the online form, eligible individuals will be added to the advisor pool and may be called upon to serve for up to three years.

Individuals selected to serve as advisors to the RFP evaluation process may only serve once every three years. After three years, they may again be considered eligible to serve if they complete and submit a new advisor application form.

Applicants who have not been selected to serve after three years and who wish to still be considered must renew their application to remain eligible for service.

If you have any questions about your eligibility to serve as an advisor, you may contact AIC Program Analyst Jonathan Estrada by email at jonathan.estrada@arts.ca.gov.
